"I would crawl over broken glass to eat here again" Propping up the bar at Shades of Retro, the chef and I were engrossed in a conversation about street food spots and suddenly arrived at the point in the conversation where the topic of Green Curry arose. I asked him where he ate the best version in Bangkok and without hesitation he said: Baan Ice. Three days later, in a completely different bar in a different part of town, I happened to bump into 2 chefs who were on a drinking binge and asked them to recommend some spots in town to eat. Both of them wrote down a long list, and highlighted Baan Ice saying over and over again "Their green curry is the best in Bangkok". Fueled by the confidence drawn from random agreement, I hurtled through the dark city, zipping at an average speed of 3 kilometers per hour on jam-packed roads, until seventeen hours later I was dropped off outside Baan Ice and proceeded to meet my two friends and order half the menu. This was one of the best green curries I ever ate. The richness but not off-putting flavour of the curry sauce combined with tender piece of beef just played with your tongue in acrobatic symphony. The soup was my least favourite but it was authentic, the crab cakes divine and the deep fried pork just as crispy and flavoursome as you'd hoped. The service is great, the location speaks of hygienic kitchens and the prices are nothing to fear. All in all this is one of the most authentic Southern Thai restaurants in the big city, and my favourite part is they do not hold back on the spice. If you ask for it hot, you're going to be saying a hundred hail mary's on the toilet the next morning. These recommendations are just personal opinions based on my palate, things change, chefs get fired or replaced, places open-close, relocate, so take it all with a pinch of MSG and discover your own gems too. But please do try a few of these, they have been researched exhaustively.
