"Under the occult rays of burning sun I walked into a rainbow and sought shelter." Spring had truly arrived. Cadiz was basking in unlimited beams of light, shorts betraying pale legs, sunglasses glued to eye's and general gaiety ensued. The evening walks by the promenade were tempered with a slight chilly wind that tricked the skin. Children ran circles around distracted parents making them pine for their bachelor days. Come morning, as the curtains were parted and yet another sunny day awoke, the need for a hearty breakfast was on the cards. Fuel for another day of walking and exploring. My kind hostess at the hotel recommended "Cafe de Ana", a brisk five minute walk across the main square where fire-jugglers pained us with their obsolete charm. A table was secured indoors as every inch of the outdoor seating had been fought over by raging tans. I asked for an English menu and ordered coffee with a slight knot in my stomach. As I was to discover in the next two weeks, the Spanish have not mastered the arts of extracting good flavour from coffee beans. Whatever was delivered to my table was not what I ordered. Somewhere along the supply chain a misunderstanding occured, and I was in no mood to tackle the delicate confusion of multiple languages before the caffeine had hit. I ate, slumped in my chair, picking apart the areas of the plate that were not doused in syrup or sugar. I hate sweet breakfasts. Despite the order being wrong, the waffel was dry, the eggs underseasoned and the sausage entirely unexciting. Sweet potato fries have never made me swoon in ecstacy, and these didn't convert me. I left half of it, chalked it down to another "lost in translation" moment, and dusted off my dreams and entered the streets just as the sun began to crank up his anger. These recommendations are just personal opinions based on my palate, things change, chefs get fired or replaced, places open-close, relocate, so take it all with a pinch of MSG and discover your own gems too. But please do try a few of these, they have been researched exhaustively.
